Housing - Doing the Doughnut Tech

Housing

Decent, affordable, safe housing for all.

A global overview

Sustainable and resilient homes and settlements are foundational for creating thriving communities, and for reducing the risk of natural disasters and climate change. However, close to one billion people (and rising) live in slums – in overcrowded, poor-quality dwellings, often with inadequate drinking water and sanitation services.

How is digital tech relevant to housing?

Areas of tension

These are the issues, negative impacts and concerns collectively raised by the attendees from our pilot workshops.

For the digital tech workforce
  • Expensive housing in or near tech hub areas causes issues such as:
    • Pricing out newcomers or lower paid roles in the industry
    • Long commutes for workers that need to be in the office
    • More working from home which can be unsuitable for some accommodation or family situations
For the global population
  • Expensive housing in or near tech hub areas causes affordability issues for the local population, especially those in low paid or unpaid roles.
  • Space that could be used as homes or social spaces are turned into tech hubs or company headquarters instead, which the local population do not have a right to use or benefit from.

How can we nudge these tensions for the better?

Grounds for hope

These are visions and ideas for change collectively raised by the attendees from our pilot workshops.

For the digital tech workforce
  • Affordable, safe, for all.
  • Remote friendly the norm.

For the global population

  • Connected 15 minute cities – health, space, food, farm, learning, energy , transport (smart cities).
  • Improvement of coliving.
  • Remote work allows for more affordable housing.
